Some may think that the NI ecosystem is mainly for hip hop/R+B/EDM, and it does lean in that direction, but it works just as well for most any other genre of music. But I found the Maschine software a bit difficult to get a handle on, well worth the work though. Both the Maschine MK3 and S series keyboard with Komplete integrate very well with third party plugins as well. The Mk3 has an audio interface and midi interface built into it, and you can perform most of the Maschine software functions from the unit without looking at the computer screen. If you're not tied to a traditional keyboard and are in the NI ecosystem, the Maschine MK3 is a great item, if you're willing to put in the time to learn Maschine. So NI might have a new version S series or replacement in the wings. All the NI hardware I have used is of the highest quality.įor some reason the S series NI controllers are on sale right now, and I dimly recall seeing the term "closeout" at one vendor (but that might be my imagination). The scrolling and control options of the S61 and Komplete, with the integration with the color screens and selection capabilities, is the best setup yet IME. It's a great system and the only issues I have are option overload with all the tones. I have a used S61 and Komplete, and use it with Ableton Live. It can be as sophisticated as you want it to be.Ĭlick to expand. The higher range (S series) NI controllers are terrific, but mainly if you are invested in the Native Instruments ecosystem. These are all hyper realistic as they're all based on recorded samples of the instruments recorded in great studios. I even have a sample library from the Abbey Road piano Paul McCartney used on Lady Madonna. With that I'm able to produce very sophisticated and realistic tracks of not only synths and multilayered synths, but a wide range of drums and percussion including orchestral percussion, guitar tracks both acoustic and electric, a range of various electric or acoustic picked and bowed basses not to mention choirs, orchestral, horn, woodwinds and string ensembles and even unusual instruments like pedal steel, harmonica and harps. ![]() I have a 49 key Komplete MIDI controller keyboard which integrates with my DAW using Native Instruments Kontakt or Komplete Kontrol. That would give you the most flexibility and range to produce very sophisticated tracks. If it's primarily recording I'd suggest you look into plugin libraries and a fairly traditional MIDI keyboard. ![]()
